snowmobiles history

The snowmobiles history starts long time ago but in the same time, is fairly recent. You may be surprised but people where able to fly before they could travel on snow. In case you didn’t know until now, the Wright Brothers flew in 1903 and 5 years later it was built the first vehicle that was compatible with the ground covered with snow. That vehicle was the design of Lombard Log Hauler and it was built in Waterville, Maine. It was a large vehicle that looked exactly like a steam locomotive. The only difference was represented by the fact that this vehicle had the design of a track and skis. A year later, O.C. Johnson built a machine that went on the top of the snow. Surprisingly, this one had ten feet long. In 1913, a Ford dealer from New Hampshire designed a track and skis for one of the Ford’s models. Snowmobiles were called like this by a fifteen year old man that designed a vehicle driven by the wind. His name was J. Armand Bombardier and he really made history. One of the most famous and amazing snowmobiles was built by Earl Eliason from Sayner, Wisconsin in the year of 1924. The vehicle looked like a toboggan with two skis steered with ropes and powered by a Johnson motor. The amazing thing is that the motor was mounted in the front of the vehicle and that was using a jack shaft. All these qualities are well known in the modern industry of snowmobiles. Earl Eliason manufactured his machine until 1939. This was the beginning of a new era in this industry.

Nowadays, there are many people who own some unique old aged snowmobile vehicles. They are called vintage snowmobiles and they can really be considered valuable treasures. If you are one of these lucky people, you should seriously think of restoration. No, you don’t have to throw away your old and expensive snowmobile because they are strong and durable. The majority of antique snowmobiles were restored by people who were fans of this sport. You can find some of these snowmobiles at small museums that were specially opened for such vehicles. By visiting such a museum you have the opportunity to ask about the history of snowmobiles that are on display. By seeing some old snowmobiles you will realize how much their look was changed. Not to say about their performance.

These days, snowmobiling is considered just an exciting sport. In the past, these vehicles were used for work, not for entertainment. That’s the reason why in those times there were manufactured faster and better performing vehicles. Besides the fact that you can go and visit different museums, you can also go to snow races where various types of new and old snowmobiles race together. If you are interested in buying an antique snowmobile, there are some websites that will inform you about the places where you can find them. On the internet you will also find details about their cost.
